While visiting my Mexican friend, Karina in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas on International Women’s Day, I unexpectedly became part of something far beyond my usual travels. What began as a casual visit quickly transformed into an experience that reshaped my perspective—I found myself marching alongside women fighting for their rights.
Coming from Singapore where strict laws prohibit public demonstrations, the idea of freely marching in the streets was unimaginable to me. But that day, I became part of something bigger than myself, raising my voice for a cause that transcended borders.
A Protest Fueled by Urgency
International Women’s Day in Mexico is not just a celebration; it’s a powerful call to action. Every year, women across the country take to the streets to demand justice and change. The protests highlight the alarming rates of gender-based violence, femicide, and systemic inequalities that women in Mexico face. The statistics are devastating, and the message is clear: women deserve to live without fear.
A Sea of Purple: The Gathering Begins

The day began with a gathering outside Soriana Hiper, a well-known supermarket, where women of all ages assembled in solidarity. Almost everyone was dressed in purple, a color symbolizing justice and dignity in the feminist movement.

Faces were marked with powerful symbols—a striking display of defiance and unity. I followed suit, marking my face with the same imagery.
Some carried placards demanding justice, while the front row held a massive banner that read: Nos Sembraron Miedo Nos Crecieron Alas. Vivas Nos Queremos! (They planted fear in us, but we grew wings. We want to live!) This statement of resilience and hope encapsulated the very reason we were there.

Marching with Purpose
Before setting off, protest leaders conducted a briefing—something I hadn’t expected, and certainly not with such detailed instructions. It was both unexpected and eye-opening.
We were instructed to stay in formation, remain vigilant, and be aware of potential infiltrators or agitators. There had been past incidents of violence against peaceful demonstrators, including attacks. This realization added a layer of intensity to the moment—I wasn’t just an observer; I was part of something deeply significant.
Chanting for Justice

As we marched through the streets, the energy was electric. Chants filled the air, banners and placards waved high, and more women joined along the way.

My favorite chant, one I shouted at the top of my lungs, was: SEÑOR, SEÑORA, NO SEA INDIFERENTE SE MATA A LAS MUJERES EN LA CARA DE LA GENTE. (Sir, Madam, do not be indifferent. Women are killed in front of people.) Holding a poster with this phrase, I felt the weight of its truth and the urgency of its plea.

Men and bystanders stood at the sides, some watching in silence, others capturing the moment on their phones. Throughout the march, organizers ensured we stayed together, guiding us toward our destination—Plaza de la Paz, the city’s central square.

More Than Just a March
By the time we reached the square, the sun had begun to set, casting a golden glow over the gathering. Cheers erupted, tears flowed, and strangers embraced. The air buzzed with a sense of triumph and solidarity. Women celebrated not just the march’s completion, but the collective strength we had built along the way.

That day was more than just a memorable experience for me—it was a powerful reminder that travel isn’t just about discovering new places. It’s also about standing for something greater, learning from different struggles, and finding ways to contribute to the fight for justice, no matter where we are in the world.
Note: This experience took place on March 8, 2020. I wanted to share this story as a remembrance of a powerful moment that continues to inspire me.
