10 Unforgettable Moments from My Northern Europe Journey

Traveling to Northern Europe was an incredibly special journey, one of reunions, first-time experiences, and discovering places I never knew existed. From reconnecting with old friends to exploring hidden gems, every moment was filled with excitement and wonder.

I explored five incredible countries: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden, and Denmark, and this was one of my most unforgettable trips. It started with a direct flight from Singapore to Helsinki and ended in Copenhagen, where I caught my flight home.

With so many cherished memories, here are my top 10 travel moments from this adventure:

1. A Glimpse into 19th-Century Finnish Prison Life

Ever wondered what prison life was like in the 19th century? If so, you must visit Finland’s first cell prison, now transformed into a museum. Walking through its dimly lit corridors and peeking into tiny cells gave me an eerie yet fascinating insight into the past. It was an experience unlike any other.

2. Discovering a Fairy Tale City in Estonia

The moment I set foot in Tallinn, Estonia, I felt like I had stepped straight into a storybook. The medieval charm, cobblestone streets, and fairy-tale architecture completely captivated me.

3. A Heartwarming Reunion in Latvia

One of the highlights of this trip was reuniting with Zane, my Latvian friend, whom I met years ago during a U.S. cultural exchange program. She took me to hidden gems I would have never found on my own.

4. Stumbling Upon My Dream Cottage

Have you ever had a dream house? Since childhood, I’ve envisioned a cozy countryside cottage with a garden and a big tree to swing under.

While exploring Sauleskalns, a Latvian village three hours from Riga, I stumbled upon a house that looked almost identical to my dream home. It was a surreal and heartwarming moment!

5. Witnessing a Stunning Natural Water Reflection

While cruising along the Daugava River, I saw the sky’s perfect reflection on the water which was so clear that it felt like I was floating between two skies. It was truly a sight to behold!

6. Finding the Perfect Wedding Photoshoot Spot

Yes, you read that right! I may not have a groom in mind yet, but if I ever get married, I want my wedding photos taken at the Koknese Castle ruins in Latvia. The breathtaking backdrop and historical charm make it the perfect fairytale setting!

7. Surviving My Longest Ferry Ride Ever

I embarked on an 18-hour ferry journey across the Baltic Sea from Riga to Stockholm, for just €33. It was long, but the scenic views and peaceful ocean waves made it an experience I’ll never forget.

8. Standing in Awe of a 17th-Century Warship

History lovers, this one’s for you! At the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, I got an up-close look at a well-preserved 17th-century warship. Seeing its grandeur and learning about its tragic history was simply mind-blowing.

9. Visiting the Birthplace of IKEA in Sweden

A trip to Sweden wouldn’t be complete without visiting the iconic IKEA! Of course, I couldn’t resist indulging in their famous Swedish meatballs while admiring the Scandinavian home designs.

10. Standing Next to the World’s Tallest Man

Did you know that the only Guinness World Records Museum in Europe is located in Copenhagen? Here, I got to stand beside a life-sized figure of the world’s tallest man, and let’s just say, I felt incredibly tiny!
